From the media:
Liz Dow, president of Leadership
Philadelphia (http://www.leadershipphiladelphia.org), in the Friday, Nov.
10 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer, was invited to list her favorite media:
the books, movies, poems, magazines, movies, music, art, theatre that have influenced
her thinking. She wrote that she would like to tip an epidemic of connection
and service in America, and closed her piece with this:
"If I had the power to order all of the Philadelphia region to read one
book, it would be: Edens Lost and Found: How Ordinary Citizens Are Restoring
Our Great American Cities, by Harry Wiland and Dale Bell. And here's why:
This book showcases several of Philadelphia's unsung heroes and shows us what
is possible when we commit to serving our community."

The Urban Sisterhood's
mission is to cultivate community and promote sustainable living in Evansville
through education, organic gardening, recycling, and environmental awareness.
We are not-for-profit organization begun in April of 2005, and we're growing
by leaps and bound with the help of our members and the surrounding community.
We have put our garden to sleep for the winter, and in the spring we will start
once again to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers for our community. We are applying
for our 501c3 as the last step in becoming official and applying for grants
to fund housing, more gardens, and an office space close to our garden. This
winter we will focus on our recycled clothing, knitting, and sewing; and educating
the public on how they can do the same. We attended the Healthy Foods, Local
Farms Conference at Bellermine University in Louisville, KY, sponsored by the
Sierra Club. Upon our return from last year's conference, we coaxed members
of our community to start a local co-op that is now thriving. We are also getting
ready to put up our official website. It should be up and running by the end
of the month!
(www.fuf.net) San Franciscans rely on FUF to
help them plant and maintain trees for a more beautiful and healthy city. Since
1981, FUF's community-based tree plantings have literally transformed San Francisco's
cityscape. In 2006, FUF celebrates its 25th anniversary. The 40,000 trees planted
in that time - together with the participation of 40,000 volunteers - represent
40% of all the city's street trees. In addition to its neighborhood street tree
planting program, FUF operates a tree care and maintenance program, and an education
program featuring the award-winning Youth Tree Care Program (YTCP). The YTCP
celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2005, and in that time has hired, paid and
trained more than 250 teenage youth from San Francisco's underserved areas to
learn tree planting and maintenance skills. FUF also operates Tree Tours around
the city and educational tree pruning workshops.
helps government, businesses and citizens scale up the sustainability movement
through two internet sites: 1. www.sustainlane.us
A free, open-source knowledge base for US state and local government officials
to exchange best practices in sustainability, and for networking among peers.
Launched in October 2006, the site in just two weeks already has more than 30
best practices from the 70 state and local government entities registered.
2. www.sustainlane.com A free site
for people to rate and discuss green products and services, and for discussion
about personal sustainability approaches and challenges.
The
ECO-Steward Real Estate Firm> Currently 300
realtors are in the process of obtaining ECO certified consultant designation
in the Greater Asheville area of North Carolina. Realtors are often the first
contact their clients have when relocating to an area. We can help to educate
real property investors on the benefits of stewardship and the value of "green
building" and open space. We carry a wealth of community knowledge and
become trusted partners in the decision-making process. We are now working on
sharing the project with a national network of realtors.
