NEWSLETTER: Volume II, Number 2
July 1, 2006
Since the PBS premiere
of the Philadelphia and Chicago segments of Edens Lost & Found in May
we have had a number of environmentally friendly organizations register on our
website and join us as Outreach
Partners. It has been exciting to hear about all of the wonderful activities
and events they are involved with, for example:
- The National Gardening Association,
a nonprofit leader in plant-based education, has a newsletter geared towards
educators to help facilitate their efforts to create school gardens. It reaches
47,000 educators and the May issue included information about Edens Lost
& Found. Learn more about the National
Gardening Association or sign up for their newsletter.
- On June 11th the
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society coordinated a
Trolley Tour to visit sites featured in the Philadelphia segment of Edens
Lost & Found. The event was a success and an additional tour may be scheduled
at some point. Thirty-five people participated which was almost double the
expected number.
- Earth 911 has a website with a wealth of information including: green
shopping tips, beach water quality reports, things you can do to decrease
air pollution, and places to take toxic items in your household for recycling
or disposal. They have included a link to our website in their education area
so that teacher¹s will be able to learn about Edens Lost & Found and
use our free downloadable teacher guides and community action guides. To check
out their site please visit: www.Earth911.org
To access their teaching materials click on the Education 911 link in the
left column and then click the green "teachers" button under "cool links."
Some recent publications about Edens
Lost & Found include:
- The Chicago segment of Edens Lost & Found was the subject of "TV
City in a Garden: Edens Lost & Found," an article published by
World Business Chicago on February 6th. Check
it out
- On May 23rd the Christian Science Monitor published: "Reclaiming
the Heart of the City: Urban planning theories are meaningless without citizens
involved in their community." The article was written by Harry Wiland
and Dale Bell, the producers of Edens Lost & Found. Read the article
- On June 14th the Philadelphia Inquirer published an article about
the Philadelphia segment of the series: "Show finds magic in Edens of
Philadelphia." The article was written by Blaine Bonham Jr., vice president
of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Bonham called the Philadelphia
segment an inspiring documentary of urban growth that left him "pumped" about
the city.
Bonham said that while organizations such as the Pennsylvania Horticultural
Society (PHS) and its Philadelphia Flower Show and Philadelphia Green program
are featured prominently in the segment, the people of Philadelphia shine
brightest. Among those whose work is heralded in the program are Iris Brown
of Norris Square in North Philadelphia, Ed Ellis of Belgrade Gardens in Fishtown,
Doris Gwaltney from Carroll Park in West Philadelphia.
Giving credit to the hundreds of other featured individuals and organizations
that have embraced the powerful connection between people and the land, Bonham
said the outcome is the betterment of their community and the rebirth of
Philadelphia's neighborhoods.
The Los Angeles and Seattle segments
of Edens Lost & Found are currently scheduled to premiere
on PBS in late Fall 2006 or early winter 2007. Our website www.edenslostandfound.org
will have the most recent information as it becomes available.
